The one-minute check
- Open the Florida DBPR license portal.
- Choose 'Search by license number' and enter the number from the quote. Ours is CGC1534542.
- Check the name matches the company on the quote, the status says current and active, and the expiry date is in the future.
- Note the qualifier's name. That is the person legally responsible for the work.
What the letters mean
| Prefix | Class | Can do |
|---|---|---|
| CGC | Certified General Contractor | Any building work statewide, including structural |
| CBC | Certified Building Contractor | Buildings up to three stories, statewide |
| CRC | Certified Residential Contractor | One- and two-family homes, statewide |
| RG, RB, RR | Registered (county) versions | Only in the counties where registered |
A kitchen or bath remodel that moves plumbing or walls needs one of these. A handyman registration or an occupational license is not a contractor license.
Insurance and the name on the quote
Ask for the certificate of insurance and check the company name on it matches the license record and the quote. For condos, the certificate should name your association's exact legal name. Ask for workers' compensation too; an injured worker without it can become your problem.
After a storm
Unlicensed operators appear after every hurricane. The signs: a license number they cannot produce, a deposit over 10% demanded in cash, a permit they want you to pull, and a truck with an out-of-state plate. Florida's Construction Recovery Fund covers some losses to licensed contractors only.
